Ambassadors for Children
Welcome back! The Eggs wrap up their service to children as they brainstorm ideas.
Why is He So Upset?
We left off last time finding Benedict running out of the video screening after seeing the Little Egg he met in the library. The other Eggs were confused; Greggory ran after him. It turns out that Benedict used to make fun of the Little Egg for being poor when he used to live on his side of town. He has learned so much from his new friends the last two years, he realized his behavior was hurtful to the Little Egg. Later, he ended up finding him and apologized.
Collecting, Collecting, Collecting!
For the next few weeks, the Eggs began collecting all kinds of school supplies and backpacks. They came up with the idea to hold a school supply drive, and the students and parents of Albumen responded in a HUGE way! They filled an entire classroom with supplies and were excited to tell Mr. Crackle of Operation Egg-Equip about their upcoming donation.
Delivering, Delivering, Delivering!
Mr. Crackle was so impressed with the amount of donations the Eggs brought to him, he asked if they would help him deliver them, too! They stopped at two schools and an apartment building, where Benedict ended up meeting Sonny, the Little Egg he was mean to a few years ago. Sonny hugged Benedict after his apology and they even wore matching Operation Egg-Equip t-shirts!
Connecting to the World
Back in the classroom, Ms. Poach reminded the Eggs of the last part of their service - to write to their friends they met abroad last year and try to include them in the project. Seggourney eagerly raised her hand. She explained that they talked it over and decided to write to Eduardo from Chile and Paison from Zambia. They had 50 filled backpacks still in the classroom. They decided to send 25 to each, so they could distribute to the needy children in their country.
The Eggs felt so good about their service and were excited to learn about the next project!
Family Activity
When there is little or no money to pay for things like food and utilities in the home, other items like school supplies and books become luxuries that just are not possible to purchase. Many of us remember back to our childhood and the excitement of going school supply shopping. Getting new pens and pencils, new notebooks and folders, erasers, glue, colored pencils, crayons, markers, and a new bag or backpack was an event we looked forward to every school year. For reasons beyond their control, many children do not and probably never have shared the exhilaration of school supply shopping – at least at the level most of us can remember. Imagine the anxiety a young person who cannot afford this experience must feel when all of her or his friends are showing off their new backpacks and pulling out all of their new supplies in the classroom. Not being prepared for class becomes a distraction and possibly even a feeling of embarrassment in the classroom. Teachers know this reality better than anyone!
Well, after all your research, are you ready to put something into action? With your kids, choose an organization or program in your own community that helps children, and collect backpacks and school supplies for them. Perhaps you can call ahead of time and arrange a tour of the facility, too. What a great family or classroom experience and a wonderful way to create an example of giving back!
Next time we meet, the Eggs will be into a new service experience!
See you in a few weeks!
