Ambassadors for Children

Hello and welcome back to the first chapter of The Good Eggs In the Community! Last time, we left off with Ms. Poach explaining how the Eggs will be ambassadors in their hometown of Albumen. Their first service project will be helping children, of course!

Backpacks with a Purpose

Ms. Poach explained that the first service project the Eggs would focus on would be collecting backpacks and school supplies for children. Benedict quickly thought about the Little Egg he encountered at the library; the one in line for free books.

"Ms. Poach, can I help the Little Egg I saw at the library this morning? He told me he didn't have any books at home."

Ms. Poach explained that the Little Egg will get books, but Benedict probably would not be able to give them to him directly. They wouldn't know who got their supplies and books; they would be donating to general fund. Benedict was disappointed but still had hope that he would see the Little Egg again.

Operation Egg-Equip

Saturday arrived and the Eggs, their parents, Ms. Poach and Coach Flo met at Operation Egg-Equip. This is the organization that will receive the collected supplies. Mr. Crackle, who runs the operation, gave everyone an introduction and tour.

"Wow, I can't believe that 10,000 Little Eggs in our community are in need of proper school supplies. I guess we are lucky that we can just go to the store and buy them whenever we want."

Mr. Crackle was glad to see the Eggs so interested in helping the kids in their community. "If we provide them with supplies, books, and tutoring, we can help develop their reading skills so they can have an easier time at school. And we all know that a good education is one of the keys to a better life."

There He Is!

After the tour, Mr. Crackle showed the group a short film about the history of Operation Egg-Equip. It showed years past up to modern day. At the end of the film, a Little Egg was waving goodbye to the crowd.

Benedict jumped up and pointed at the screen. "That's him - the Little Egg I saw in the library! We have to help him - PLEASE!"

Mr. Crackle and Ms. Poach assured Benedict that the Little Egg would be ok, but he ran out of the room yelling, "No one understands!"

Family Activity

Often times, our children, and maybe even we ourselves, don’t recognize the systemic problems children who live in poverty face. Children who live in poverty situations often lack basic necessities at home due to financial constraints.

  • Research your local organizations that focus on the needs of children, especially those living in poverty. Visit their websites to learn more about the work they do. Continue your conversation with your kids from our previous post.

Next time - we'll put it into action!

See you soon!

Wishing you all GOOD things,

Sandy
