Ambassadors for Elders
Hi Everyone! Are you ready for another day of service at the Albumen Omelette Oasis? : )
Planning Their Visits
The next week at school, Ms. Poach gave out the assignments to the Eggs. Megg was excited she was going to work in the salon. "Look, Seggourney - I get to polish nails for the ladies!"
"That's cool - and I get to lead aerobics with the residents! I have so many ideas!" answered Seggourney. "And I also get some painting lessons with Great Aunt Flo!"
Reggie, sneezing again several times, shared that he would be leading story time with Uncle Yolkus. Greggory was in charge of leading shuffleboard and Benedict was going to work in the flower garden, tending to the flowers and vegetable plants. Peggy was going to run the movie theater, helping the residents to their seats and making them popcorn! They also had time set aside to practice for the holiday concert. All in all, it was going to be a grand time of service!
Getting Involved
For the next few Saturdays, the Eggs carried out their assignments and practiced for the concert. One Saturday, they met up at the end of the day and were exhausted! Ms. Poach saw how hard they were working and decided to treat them to some ice cream. Then she had a question for them.
"Children, the residents here at the Albumen Omelette Oasis have grown very fond of you. They would like for you and your families to eat Thanksgiving Dinner with them here at the Oasis. What do you think?"
The Eggs were excited to share the news with their families, and when Thanksgiving arrived, they all gathered in the Oasis dining room to share a beautiful meal of love and gratitude. They all helped to clean up and headed home for the night.
Where Was Uncle Yolkus?
That night, Reggie asked him mom if she saw Uncle Yolkus. His mom told him that she heard he was taken to the hospital with pneumonia. Immediately, Reggie started to cry, thinking that he gave Uncle Yolkus pneumonia by his constant sneezing. Reggie's mom reassured him that wasn't the case, but it did not comfort Reggie. He cried himself to sleep.
Reggie's mom took him to the doctor's office the next day to see why the sneezing persisted. He had no signs of infection or a cold, but Reggie's mom did recall that she used a new laundry detergent right about the time Reggie's sneezing started. The doctor said it is probably an allergy. Stop using it and see what happens.
Peggy reminded Reggie, "Remember, Great Aunt Flo told you it was probably an allergy." Reggie was hoping that was the case. AND - it was! Whew! He was relieved to know he was not responsible for giving Great Uncle Yolkus pneumonia, which was clearing up nicely, according to Megg's mom.
Family Activity
In the United States, statistics show that the numbers of elderly are increasing, especially with the retirement of the Baby Boom generation and the fact that people in general are living longer. Care for the elderly needs to be at the forefront of our attention as citizens. Too often people go through life thinking they are going to remain young forever and never get old. We know it just doesn’t work that way. The old adage of treating people how you want to be treated always rings true, but especially when we ponder our own aging.
Contact a local nursing home or assisted living center and ask if you can bring your child or class for a visit. Consider going when they have group activities like games or sing-a-longs. It is just about guaranteed to be a positive and fun experience for your child or class, the elderly, and yourself! Senior citizens love having children around. Such an experience will open up lots of eyes and lots of hearts.
I wish you a beautiful Thanksgiving - be sure to count your blessings!
See you in December!
