Welcome back – the Eggs are just beginning to tour Italy!
First Stop, The Coliseum
After breakfast, the group boarded a bus to the Coliseum. The Eggs marveled at the ancient site.
“The Coliseum was built of stone and concrete and finished in 80 CE. It was built to hold 50-70,000 spectators,” taught Shelly.
“What was it used for?” asked Reggie.
“Sporting events and shows, and even gladiator fights,” answered Angelo. “Look at this trap door – sometimes animals would pop out of here.”
Margherita jumped behind Benedict and said, “POP, POP!”
Benedict’s heart began to race and then realized it was Margherita.
“Hey, don’t do that!” he yelled.
Everyone laughed and continued to explore the Coliseum. At the end of the day, they were exhausted and stopped for some delicious gelato.
“I want to try every flavor before we leave!” said Reggie.
Here Comes Peggy!
As the Eggs returned to their hotel, they were met in the lobby by Peggy! They all embraced.
“Peggy, did you get our postcards?” asked Seggourney.
“Yes, I loved them all. I’m so excited to be here!” she replied.
A Leaning Tower
Later in the week, the Eggs boarded a train for Pisa, a city with a leaning tower. Shelly explained that architects and builders have tried to fix the tower but it keeps leaning. It is quite the tourist attraction.
“I bet if we push really hard, we can help straighten it out,” suggested Angelo as he winked at Margherita.
The Eggs were all agreeing with him, when Shelly burst out laughing.
“That’s not going to happen; Angelo is kidding with you!”
The Eggs felt embarrassed as they fell for another prank!
When they arrived, they all wanted to climb the tower. Reggie was so excited he ran up the spiral staircase ahead of all the others. When he got to the top, he was sick. The Eggs helped him down and his mom took over. She sat him under some shade and got him something to drink.
“I won’t do that again,” said Reggie.
A Pizza Miracle!
Once they were all out of the tower, Angelo and Margherita motioned the Eggs to follow them.
“Come, we will eat pizza in the Piazza dei Miracoli, the Piazza of Miracles!” said Angelo.
They spent the afternoon enjoying the pizza and talking about the tower.
Family Activity
Research the history of the Coliseum. Find out what kind of “sea battles” took place there.
Make a paper mache model of the Coliseum or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Don’t forget the detail.
Make pizza together! Visit your nearest Italian bakery and buy a pizza dough ball. Stretch it out (throw it in the air) and get creative by using your favorite toppings. Enjoy your meal!
Ciao!
