Ambassadors for Hunger

Hi Everyone! Spring will soon be upon us! The Eggs will be starting a new service project - helping the Albumen Breakfast Stop, which is an organization that feeds the hungry in their town. But, Benedict is trying to back out of this project. Why?

Looking Forward to Baseball Season

As the Eggs returned to school on Monday, they were talking about the upcoming baseball meeting with Coach Flo. They knew they would need extra practice since they missed their entire season last year traveling abroad.

Ms. Poach explained the new service project as Benedict's stomach grumbled in class. "This is a perfect time to talk about the Albumen Breakfast Stop," she said. She explained that the ABS helps the hungry in town and also helps with programs to help their lives take shape. The Eggs were surprised to learn that people in their own hometown sometimes did not have enough to eat.

Odd Reaction

Benedict asked if they could pick a different service project. And if not, he announced that he would not be participating in this one. Ms. Poach and the Eggs did not understand his reaction. Seggourney tried to talk to Benedict, but he wanted to be left alone. The Eggs figured they would try to talk to him another time.

Time for Practice

At baseball practice that afternoon, Coach Flo asked if anyone saw Benedict. She wondered if he was planning on being part of the team this year. The Eggs told her that Benedict reacted strangely in class that morning as they were talking about the Albumen Breakfast Stop. They weren't sure if he was going to play baseball.

Trying to Help

Just then, Coach Flo saw Benedict running across the field. He approached Coach and said, yes, he was planning on playing baseball this year, but had to ask a favor first. Benedict asked her if Sonny, the little Egg from Operation Egg Equip, could play on the team. He wanted to make up for his poor behavior toward Sonny when he was younger.

Coach Flo cautioned that Sonny had to be at every practice. It would be difficult because he lives on the other side of town. Benedict guaranteed that he and his mom would pick up Sonny for every practice. Coach Flo agreed and told Benedict she was proud of him for making things right with Sonny.

Family Activity

The most shocking surprise people have about hunger is how close it is to their own front door. We often don’t know there are probably people in our own neighborhoods and schools who need food assistance. When it comes to hunger, knowledge is key. It is important for those who are hungry to know how to get the food they so desperately need. Knowledge of hunger is also important for all of us to have so we can all play a part in feeding the hungry. We all need to know and recognize the causes and the effects of hunger in order to pursue different ways to feed the hungry and prevent future hunger from occurring.

  • Spend some time researching hunger globally and locally. The statistics are powerful tools to help all of us realize the systemic problem of hunger in our world and hopefully cause us to want to do all we can to eradicate hunger. A good place to start on a global level is with the United Nations World Food Programme website (www.wfp.org) where you can find hunger FAQs, maps, statistics, and the causes, effects, and prevention of hunger. After learning about the global effects of hunger, research its local effects of hunger as well as local organizations and agencies that fight hunger. If you don’t already, donate and volunteer! Sometimes, “doing” is the best education.

See you next time! Happy Spring!

Wishing you all GOOD things,

Sandy
