Ambassadors for Animals

Well, the Eggs are finishing up this month with their service to the AAR (Albumen Animal Rescue). Will Megg and Coach Flo get to adopt their animals? And what about Scrambler, Benedict's dog?

Let's see what they're up to. . .

Busy, Busy, Busy

The Eggs were busy making posters for the animal adoption drive and for the pet supplies drive. Ms. Poach let them have some class time to prepare. They hung everything up around the school and also passed out information from the AAR. The school even let them have an assembly to get the message across to all students. By the end of the day, they had 65 students interested in adopting a pet! And by the end of the week, all of the students and their parents made an appointment with the AAR to adopt. The Eggs were thrilled and so thankful that many of the animals will go to loving homes!

Greggory made a school-wide announcement thanking everyone for doing their part. He made an additional plea for more pet supplies, which turned out in droves! They filled a classroom full of supplies - Dr. Jesegga at the AAR were so excited and grateful! Both drives were an overwhelming success!

Scrambler

It was nearing the end of the waiting period for Megg and Coach Flo to find out if they were able to adopt Snowball and Daisy. They would find out this upcoming weekend.

The day before the weekend, though, Reggie and his mom were out doing errands (once again on snow-covered roads). All of a sudden, a little brown dog jumped out into the street! Reggie's mom swerved to avoid him, but it was too late. She hit the dog. Reggie and his mom jumped out of the car, horrified, to find it was Scrambler, Benedict's dog, lying in the snow. Benedict came running up behind them. "Scrambler ran away and I was chasing him - OH NO! Is he ok?" Benedict and Reggie were crying as Reggie's mom scooped Scrambler up out of the snow and laid him on a blanket in the back seat of her car. She drove to the AAR as fast as she could, but it seemed to take forever due to the slippery roads.

Dr. Jesegga immediately took Scrambler into surgery. It was a few hours before Benedict heard anything. Finally, Dr. Jesegga came out and said he was stable but they would have to watch him through the night. She suggested everyone go home to get some rest. She would meet them back at the AAR in the morning.

Tears of Joy

The next morning, Scrambler was still not responsive. Dr. Jesegga led Benedict into the recovery room, where he was resting. Benedict did not leave his side.

In the meantime, this was the day that Megg and Coach Flo were to find out if they could adopt Snowball and Daisy. Megg ran to the crate where Snowball was held and it was empty! She began to cry and ran over to her mom. "Someone must have adopted Snowball," she said through tears.

"You're right, Megg. WE DID!" replied her mom. Megg looked up and saw the vet technician carrying Megg out of a examining room. She handed her to Megg as she finished tying a beautiful pink ribbon around her neck. Megg was overjoyed!

Coach Flo walked in momentarily and said Daisy's owners came to claim her. She was so disappointed. However, the technician overheard Coach Flo and remarked that Daisy's owners just turned her back in because they had to move out of town. Coach Flo adopted Daisy on the spot!

Just then, Benedict came out of the recovery room with tears running down his face. "He woke up! Scrambler woke up!" The Eggs gathered around him and they all hugged tight.

"This is the best day ever," remarked Megg.

Connecting to the World

The next week at school, Greggory told Ms. Poach that they had been in contact with Rashi from India. She was going to start a pet adoption and supplies drive at the schools in her town. She was also going to pass the word to other schools in the country so everyone could help support the animals. Ms. Poach was so proud of the Eggs for extending their service worldwide!

Family Activity

The danger of losing a pet, if handled with care, can also be a helpful opportunity to teach children about the important role animals play in our lives. Animals should be cared for and respected simply on the basis of being a living creature with which we share space and resources on this great earth. Animals make wonderful companions and teachers. Exposing our children to animals, even the injured, abused, neglected or sick can be a multifaceted education for us and our children.

  • People can certainly help animals, but animals can help people, too. Research local agencies that train leader dogs for the blind and deaf as well as other conditions that make these specially trained dogs indispensable. If you don’t have a local agency that trains leader dogs, go to Leader Dogs for the Blind (www.leaderdog.org) to learn more about this life-giving organization that truly helps people to live full and active lives all because of dogs!

Next time, we'll meet the Eggs at a food bank - doing service for those in their community who struggle with food insecurity.

Have a Happy Valentine's Day - hug your loved ones, including your pets! : )

Wishing you all GOOD things,

Sandy
